July 2008

A long time ago, Meghan and I wandered through central park and I saw a celebrity. (see blog entry May 27) The only problem with this sighting is that I knew he was famous, but didn’t know who he was. It’s been bothering me ever since then, but how do you figure out who it is?

You watch National Treasure: Book of Secrets and see that very celebrity. And that celebrity is….

Harvey Keitel!!! I cannot tell you how much this has been bothering me and I’d like to thank the fine people at Disney for casting my mystery celebrity.

Another great thing is that it’s Shark Week on Discovery Channel! I love love love shark week. Already this week I’ve learned that the great while can tolerate much lower temperatures and much deeper water than originally suspected. I’m currently watching Mythbusters: Shark Week and will later report to you on whether or not:

1. flashlights attract sharks

2. it is possible to poke a shark in the eye while in it’s mouth

3. sharks are attracted to dogs

4. playing dead will keep a shark from attacking

inquiring minds want to know and i will happily fill you in. one can only hope that you don’t encounter a shark between now and when i give you the answers.

Steven Mark Genow. I won’t tell the people how old you are. Just that it’s greater than 50 and less than 52.

Several weeks ago I decided to get smart and finally organize all of my important papers and throw away the stuff I was keeping that was no longer necessary. During this highly organized process I could not find my most recent New York State Nursing License. I found my expired in 2006 Oklahoma License, but no NY at all. Not even the old one. The crappy thing about this, not that it’s not crappy in and of itself was that I had just had this one renewed and sent to me in the mail about a month before this search. So where did I put it? Did I accidentally throw it away? That was my fear and the conclusion that I came to and believed…until today…

I was looking for some notes I had made several months ago and decided to look through the bags I carried at the time. And what did I find in my old hospital tote bag? That’s right, my new nursing license. Along with my nursing license were other odd things. 6 playbills from broadways shows i saw last winter, a blank notebook i don’t remember buying, a USB that i guess is mine though i’ve never seen it and the notes i was looking for (okay, that last one is not so odd). This raises several questions:

1. why was the license in the bag in the first place?

2. did i take it with me to work one day?

3. did i put it in there on purpose as a storage option?

4. did i put all of these things in on purpose as a storage option?

5. if yes to above then why did i do that and why do i have no memory of it?

Alas, we may never know how this odd combination of missing items came to be. No matter. The important thing is that I am a nurse and can prove it. Always important, I think. Yeah for the unexpected discovery of my presumed lost forever nursing license! Hip Hip Hooray!

Please take a moment to admire the lovely hair the Genow sisters are sporting in the photo below.

Allow me to list what we did today while you ponder with us why it is that we only took this one photo.

1. Trip to store to return some shoes of Lisas and buy a dress for her.

2. Trip for Lisa to the post office while I bought the next 3 books in the Dark Tower series and 3 other impulse buy books that I am super-pumped about!

3. Trip to TKTS booth to get discount tickets to Broadway show.

4. Then to see the movie Mamma Mia. Note to selves, Pierce Brosnan not a good singer!

5. Off to Ruby Tuesday for our favorite dinner: bbq bistro chicken. yum!

6. then to see [title of show] a new broadway musical that was absolutely fantastic. run, don’t walk to see it! so very good!

we had a lovely day just us girls in the city.

p.s. at ruby tuesday i tried a drink called the grape martini. white grape juice and vodka. really really good. for serious, pour one now and enjoy.

regular blog reader and one of my favorite people: Erica! I hope you had a great day and enjoy the rest of your vacation! We miss you!

Mom and Dad left for Montreal yesterday and will be there with the FC’s until Friday. Meghan and I immediately took naps to commemorate their departure. We don’t like this day schedule stuff. Getting up and being someplace for an activity before noon is no good for us night shifters! Next time we have visitors, I think we’ll make them stick to our schedule.

The important thing that happened Sunday was that mom and dad saw a celebrity. We were on our way to the car rental place and they had yet to achieve what all visitors who aren’t maren have achieved when Kevin Bacon walked by us. So sorry maren, but your rotten luck continues!

We started our day with some sleeping in and then watched Fools Rush In on TBS in honor of our Grays Papaya eating of yesterday. Then we headed out to eat some brunch and the off to Rockefeller Center.

We saw all the lovely views of the city and got to spend time in Jeff and Maren’s favorite part of the city: The Target Breezeway (a small room with lights that follow you around).

We also took our picture with our friend, the viewing guy.

This is a tradition every time I go to the Top of the Rock, which has been 4 times in the last 8 months.

I seem to go there more often than any local should. What can you do? I secretly love it!

We took mom and dad all around Rockefeller Center and then to St. Patricks Cathedral.

Then we got ready for a BBQ with some girlfriends at Kari Jo’s house.

Thanks Kari Jo! We had such a good time enjoying your backyard!

Sunday the folks head up to Montreal to see the FC’s…

This fine friday in the city, we had a typical upper west side Grays Papaya (2 hotdogs and a drink for $3.50) lunch sitting outside and then got on the train to head to the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and some new waterfall art installations.

(Please note that the photos don’t necessarily go with the words written above them. I wanted to include several from our ferry ride and we dropped the ball a little on pictures of our other activites.)

Then we walked up from the South Ferry to the Wall Street bull and the New York Stock Exhange.

We did a little shopping at the fabulous Fishs Eddy (which has signed a deal to move back to the upper west side! and should be opening in February) and wandered through union square (outdoor market/shops).

Then we headed home for a Malaysian feast. Duck rolls, roti canai, spicy shrimp and vegetables, green curry with chicken, chicken and veggies in a pepper sauce and the best part=coconut rice! There was good food and there was a lot of it. You can’t go wrong with that equation.

After dinner, mom and dad and I headed to see Spamalot on Broadway. It was great and one I hadn’t yet seen. I’m pretty sure mom enjoyed it as I heard her distinctive cackle at least twice.

On the walk home we stopped at mom’s favorite place in new york, Fairway Market. Who knew the grocery store would be the high point of the trip? She liked it so much that she volunteered to go out by herself into new york city to get some toilet paper. Impressive. She made it out and excluding a small problem getting back into our building, she made it back uneventfully. Way to go, mom!

Tomorrow is Rockefeller center and an bbq with friends…

We started day two in the city at Cafe Viand, our favorite local place to eat breakfast. Then we met up with Meghan and walked through Central Park to get to the Met. That’s right, we made it to the museum! Way to go us! This is us stopping outside the museum to beverage up before getting cultured up.

Inside the museum we did what all people do in the Met, which was get lost and wonder if we’d ever make it out. But, we did and had a good time inside, seeing great paintings and a special exhibit called “Pietre Dure” which was awesome. (It’s hard to explain but is colored stones pieced together to make intricate designs that the european royalty was in love with for a time and is absolutely beautiful) Totally worth our struggle to find it in the museum. (with the help of two useless and one very helpful docent)

While you’re not technically allowed to take pictures at the met, I took a picture of the floor in the sculpture area and the ceiling in a spanish art area so you could all see how lovely they are. Also, if feeling the urge to re-do the floors in my apartment, I’d like the tile work pictured below. Thanks.

Post museum we went to Ezra’s to see Erica before she leaves for a trip to California and meet up with Lisa. There Dad made a new best friend (Ezra) who was attached to dad the entire time we were there. He would occassionally walk to someone else, then immediately back to his BFF. It was pretty cute.

Here’s wishing Erica a great trip and we will miss you!

After Ezra’s, we walked down to Peter’s, our favorite Italian restaurant, where mom had her first (3) cosmopolitan and the best scallops she had ever tasted. A good meal was had by all.

Then we wandered home, stopping to get frozen yogurt and cranberry juice so mom could make more cosmopolitans (2) at the house. We played some games with Meghan and Lisa and had a lovely day.

Off to the statue of liberty, rockefeller center and a broadway show on friday…

So, today was the first day in the city for the folks. Sadly, they did not go for the matching flower motif that they wore on their way here.

Dad and i went to see the yankees play the twins and in a shocking turn of events, with two genows in attendance, the yankees won! what? i guess maybe it’s not genow that is bad luck, but the combination of genow/risinger. Good to know for the future.

It was a great and quick game. There was great pitching and a few innings of action and we had the best seats. Below is the view of where we usually sit from our awesome today seats.

They were padded chairs and we were about 30 yards from A-Rod when he played 3rd and there were concierge people who took your food/drink order and brought it to you! It was cool to be fancy for a day.

Mom and Lisa hung out in the afternoon, eating lunch with zak, hanging in Bryant Park and seeing Young Frankenstein the Musical. Then we all met up to eat dinner at one of our favorite places, Tibetan Kitchen. Let me applaud the folks and their willingness to try new and spicy things and love them! Way to eat Brianne and Lisa style, mom and dad!

Alas, the only thing missing from our day, aside from the rain which was expected, but happily left us be, was Meghan who had to work. Our only interaction with her was in the morning when she taught mom how to work her new cell phone. We missed you, poopy pants!

Stay tuned for Day Two…
