Yesterday was a great, if soggy, fourth of July. We had hot dogs and a cupcake buffet and then went to see Hancock (really funny and good) and then walked as far east as you can go before you hit river and waited for the fireworks to start.
It was a long wait…during which we (in typical nurse fashion) discussed nerve pathways and a woman with a terrible illness. Nice for the people around us I am sure.
As we were waiting to walk home, we chatted with that nice cop you see in the photo of us in the daylight above. It was his second day on the force. Meghan asked him how many people he thought were there to view the fireworks (keeping in mind they shut down the highway that runs along the east side for us all to stand on to see the show) and he said 3,000. Not anywhere close, Officer Lazarus. However, as he is only slightly worse at guessing how many people can fit into a space that I am, we won’t mock, we’ll only hope that this is a skill that he improves upon.
I really liked this picture because it looks like a scene from a 4th of July/alien movie. Cop standing in the shadow of some huge smoke cloud on an abandoned roadway in NYC.
One great bonus of our night was that Lisa and I (after a lot of fruitless searching) found frozen custard in the city as we were wandering home! Yeah! So, we had ice cream for dinner and it was good. Other than a Sonic and a Target on the island, the only thing NYC was missing was a place to get frozen custard and now we have found it. Yep, life is good in the city. Even when you get nice and wet while watching fireworks in the rain with your umbrellas down so the people behind you can see.
And finally, if you didn’t see Sportscenter last night, you missed seeing Jeff Perrett (Maren’s husband) and his team as the #1 play of the 4th of July Top Ten! That’s right, #18 on Jeff’s team made this amazing one-armed catch and bully for him. However, the part that got Brianne, Meghan and Lisa cheering in the living room was at the beginning of the play where #54 Jeff Perrett makes a great block to keep the quarterback out of danger so he can throw the pass to set up the awesome catch. Well done, JFC, well done. It really is living the dream to be seen on ESPN! Our congratulations! (which he already got as we called immediately and cheered in our message!)
