Last night I finished “Magyk”, the first book in the Septimus Heap magic series. It was quite good and I am looking forward to the others. However, I realized after I finished the book that I am reading quite a few series of books.
1. Septimus Heap Series
2. The Dark Tower Series
3. The Inheritance Trilogy (about a boy who finds a dragon egg)
4. The Inkheart Series (about a dad who reads aloud from stories and the characters come to life)
This begs the question: Can a person be reading too many series of books at once? Clearly, this is no coincidence. I obviously don’t want to just know characters in a book for the week it takes me to read it. I clearly like to know characters for weeks, months, years. Perhaps it’s my all-consuming love of General Hospital that has made me feel like every character in my fictional world should be a long-term resident and not just an interloper.
We should all be happy to know that the book I picked up after Magyk is not in a series. It’s called “the house of the scorpion” and is technically a children’s book. I don’t agree with that classification, but will make my final decision when I finish it. Let’s just say that I don’t think books involving clones are for children. (or those of us adults who have a freakish fear of all things clone!)
