September 2008

Okay, I know I just blogged about sleep, but that blog got me thinking about other sleep-related things and here we are. I was thinking that one of the many great things about living in New York is the fact that I have learned how to sleep on public transportation. Not a skill I posessed before.

I can do it on a train:

I can do it on a plane:

I can do it on a bus:

I can do it with no fuss! I can do it here or there, I can sleep anywhere.

Sorry, but halfway through I realized that I was sounding like Green Eggs and Ham (Ezras current favorite book) so I thought I’d run with it. I find this new skill is quite handy. It’s also so very nice to have the option of not having to pay any attention whatsoever on your way to or from you destination. Public transportation, you save the environment and you let us take naps! You rock!

I know you are due updates about our trip which i will post soon. Good times were had by all.

That’s right, women in a car! Lisa, Meghan and I took a road-trip to Maren Stefanie Genow’s house (and Jeff’s too) on Friday. We got to drive in a real live car!

I know it’s everyday for most of you, but for us, it’s not. I hadn’t driven a car since Maren’s wedding. That’s right, July of 2007. Is it sad or awesome that at least 50% of my excitement over this trip was based on the fact that I’d get to drive? I think awesome! And I hope Maren doesn’t feel that that reflects any way on her. I mean, who do I like better than Maren? The answer my dears, is no one. (sorry for those of you who thought you might edge her out)

One interesting detail about our trip is the not so stellar planning that all three of us showed when we all decided to work the night before. This meant that when we went to pick up our rental car, none of us had slept. Yes, that’s right. Three nurses fast approaching being awake for 24 hours in a car driving into another country.

And now we’re in Canada. Land of the free and home of the brave. Oh wait, that’s not them. That might be evidence of my lack of sleep. What can you do?

Preview of our weekend with the FC’s. (FC’s= what I call Maren and Jeff. Maren used to call Jeff, JFC meaning Jeff From Canada. So, when she married in she then became MFC and thus they together are the FC’s. I just wanted to clarify as that is how I tend to refer to them and I didn’t want people to be confused) Yummy homemade food from Maren. Mario Cart tournaments on the Nintendo Wii. Gerogie versus Alabama football on Saturday. Jeff’s football game on Sunday. It’s going to be a great weekend and I’ll update you all soon.

Just another reason to love Moaning Myrtle (my iphone): she helps me sleep

That’s right! You can download (for free) an application on the ole iphone that is like one of those sleep sound maker thingies from Sharper Image (decidedly not free). It has over 50 sounds to choose from that you can play while you are sleeping. You can even set a timer! What? Life is good with this application. I would like to say that I have explored the many options availble to me and have now chosen a favorite. The truth is that I explored two of the sounds available to me and have chosen a favorite. It was a close call but “rain with thunders” beat out “rain”.

There are many interesting choices that perhaps (but probably not) I will one day listen to. These include “volcano erupting”, “ferry fog horn”, “aliens” and “movie”. There are also things like “contemplative 1″ and “contemplative 2″ which I find funny. Perhaps I should listen to them all one day when I am bored. Something to think on.

Let me tell you how this has greatly improved my world. Now that the kids are back at the school next door and screaming like they do on the playground three times a day (grr!) it gets pretty loud in my room when I am trying to sleep during the day. And now that summer is over and there is no need for a fan there is nothing to block out any of the annoying child noise. Enter the sleep application. I turn it on, put on my “rain with thunders” and happily drift off to sleep to the sounds of my childhood instead of the sounds of other peoples childhoods. It’s nice!

I also like that I am able to fall asleep to something that would keep other people awake. All the time Meghan will say “did you hear that storm last night?” when there has been an actual storm and I always have to say “no, slept like a baby”. I think it’s from growing up in the middle of tornado alley that has made me immune to the keeping awake properties of thunder and rain and lightning and trees falling over. I personally think that there is nothing better than a thunderstorm to fall asleep to. Okay, Saturday afternoon football commentary on a boring game and also baseball commentary are two pretty good things as well. If only there were old Michigan games I could listen to while falling asleep. That would be spectacular. And perhaps in my sleep I’d pick up obscure football stats from the 1950’s. I am sure that would come in handy as well. I’ll look into it.

Happy sleeping to you all!

I was recently reading an issue of Women’s Health and came across some interesting info that I thought I’d pass onto you, my faithful blog readers.

1. Lipstick sales increase $25 million dollars for every 1% rise in the unemployment rate. I guess women like to buy cheap cosmetics during tough times. Who can blame a girl really? And just because money is tight doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have moisturized and slightly tinted lips.

2. 72% of women surveyed by Loreal about haircolor said that they found brunettes to be the most trustworthy. I couldn’t agree more. And a hearty thanks!

3. Life expectancy rates for females have stalled-even declined-in some parts of the country. Between 1983 and 1999 (the latest year for which information has been compiled) womens life expectancy fell significantly in 180 countries. By significantly, they mean 3-6 years. Eek! They listed the top 10 cities in terms of loss of years and 3 of them were in Virginia. Note to selves, stay out of Virginia! Bad things will happen to you and you might not get out alive!

One can only hope that this useless information has made us all a little bit smarter and that one day will help one of us answer some sort of money winning trivia question!

On Sunday, I bought a book called “why not catch-21?”. It’s about the actual reasons behind some of the most famous book titles that are not well known to most of us.

I can’t wait to read it so that I can find out why it wasn’t Catch 21. Some of the others I am excited about are:

The Great Gatsby, A Clockwork Orange and Hamlet. I’ll be sure and let you know about the really interesting ones.

I’m pretty excited about this week because we leave for Montreal on Friday to see Maren! Yeah! And also, some of our favorite tv shows start this week. And, today is the first day of fall. All in all, a great week.

I’d like to give myself an A for Effort when it comes to my attempt to capture on film some portion of John’s visit. However, that would be a false grade when in fact, I deserve an F. I never tried. Not once. I never even had my camera with me when I left the house. What can you do? If I were a talented artist, I could sketch for you some part of our day on Sunday.

Ah, Sunday…my favorite day of the week in NYC. And thanks to John, I didn’t work yesterday for the first Sunday in a long time. We ate brunch and sat next to this adorable little girl and her dad. This little girl who talked her dad into ordering the following for the two of them: french onion soup, cheeseburger with fries, chicken noodle soup “with 800 crackers” and 3 scrambled eggs. Try not to be shocked when the little girl declared half-way through the soup that she was full. To which her dad replies, “tell me you’re kidding”. She then told him that if he let her wait a minute for “my stomach to stop going to the bathroom and it will all turn into acid and then I can eat some more”. Poor girl with her Dad who is cleary not so learned when it comes to kids.

After brunch we spent some time wandering around Barnes and Noble and then we went to see a movie. We got to the movie theatre early so we sat outside on a lovely bench in a little courtyard and watched birds taking a bath in a waterfall. Yes, that actually happened in the middle of New York City. Below is a picture (not taken by me) of where we sat behind the movie theatre.

All in all, a great Sunday in the city with some of the best weather we’ve seen in a while. It was perfect outside. Perfect.

Thanks John for a fun weekend of re-living our college glory and thanks NYC for providing a great Sunday.

So, your friend and mine, John has been here this weekend. I’d like to tell you all about it with photos to illustrate, but we haven’t taken any. Oops! I will, instead, give you a brief summary of our weekend so far: drinking, napping, football. Yep, that’s been it and it’s been great. It’s like college all over but with a nicer apartment and more money. It’s really living the dream! I’ll give you more details and, if we can focus, a photo or two. Happy Sunday to you all and I hope you all enjoyed college football like we did.

Oops! After I finished this book, I found out that this children’s book is part of a trilogy. Crap! I didn’t mean to get involved in another series of books. Luckily, the other two were written after the first one did so well, so it wasn’t originally intended to be a trilogy. This enables me to not have to read the other two. Thank goodness. I just can’t do another series right now. There are too many going on.

The Thief was a nice little children’s book that got me through a night at Ezras. Right before Ezra woke up for 2.5 hours in the middle of the night for no reason. Lucky for him I was done with my book so I wasn’t too mad at him. And don’t tell his parents, but after several attempts to get him back to sleep, we played and laughed and sang for an hour. Oops. But it was nice to get to hang out with Ezra on Briannes schedule.

Next book: Brideshead Revisited. So far, it’s good good good.

Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! We love you!

Happy Birthday and may all your dreams come true!

When you blow out the candles, one remains aglow…

It’s the love light in your eyes, where ever you may go!

Don’t worry, I didn’t compose an overly cheesy poem for Marens birthday, I just typed out the words to the happy birthday song our senior English teacher, Mrs. Griffin, taught us that I sing to Maren every year.

I also really like it when Maren’s birthday rolls around. It now makes me 26 and Maren 25. I feel so much younger than the other 6 months of the year when I’m 26 and she’s 24.

Happy Birthday, sister!

Attempt One: rain and a sick Zak.

Attempt Two: we lost the tickets

Attempt Three: We made it to the Yankee game! It’s a good thing too since the last game at the stadium is Sunday.

Not only were we sitting around some really fun people, but the Yankees won! What? With me in attendance? Yes, that’s right. I am two for two this summer.

We also decided to take nursing headshots at the Yankee game.

This way we have options.

I am glad we finally made it after so many attempts. We are not looking forward to the new, expensive Yankee stadium. I don’t think the odds are in our favor for a visit any time in the near future. So, enjoy the views as you may not be getting any for quite some time.

Oh! Guess who is coming to visit later today? That’s right. It’s everyones favorite college neighbor, John!

I’ll keep you posted on our fun weekend of football watching and drinking.
