February 2009

Today I will tell you about the early part of yesterday and then tomorrow I’ll tell you about Friday night.

Zak and I met for our $6 Friday the 13th viewing and he brought us Crystal Light Icee’s from 7-11. Crystal Light frozen? Awesome. And while I didn’t hug Zak when I saw him, I did give him a hug when he revealed the frozen treat hidden under his coat.

In today’s edition of movie reviews I must say that both Zak and I decided that My Bloody Valentine 3-D was better than Friday the 13th. I mean, first, the 3-D movie came with awesome glasses, and we got nothing for seeing 13. Then there was also the fact that the makers of My Bloody Valentine knew they were making a bad movie and made it awesomely bad. The makers of Friday the 13th seemed to think they were making a good movie and tried way too hard and it didn’t work out for them. There were a few too many holes for my taste and it was funny in ways that I don’t think they intended. Zak and I had to keep covering our mouths to laugh silently because we were the only ones in the theatre laughing.

After our movie, we decided to lunch, but instead went to Zaks apartment, drank for a few hours and then ate lunch while waiting for Zak to finish his laundry. What did we drink? Well, thanks for asking. We drank a suicide of sorts, also called a Manhattan Iced Tea, which was a mixture of all the things Zak had in his studio.

1. French Vanilla Kahlua

2. Vodka

3. Dark Rum

4. Pepsi

5. Raspberry Lime Seltzer

6. Banana/Pineapple Fuze drink

7. Ginger Beer

Yes, that is an actual list of the items in our beverage and you may be shocked to learn that it was quite good. We liked it. If you visit NYC, we’ll mix you up a batch. But I’ll need advanced notice because who just has those things in their home? The liquor? Yes. The other items? Not so much.

Anyway, after this drinking, I came home and attempted to take a nap which was really more of a “laying down time” but was nice nonetheless. Seriously, I heart my bed.

This takes us to 6:00 pm when Lisa and Julie came over to start our evening. And there ends todays story…

Oh! Wait, I forgot to tell you about the funny thing that happened while Zak and I were drinking. It’s 2:00 in the afternoon, we are drinking our suicides and all of a sudden we are having this conversation where we are both crying! What?! It was so crazy and so funny and actually had us saying out loud “why are we crying at 2:00 in the afternoon?” Yes, good times. I hope this was not a side effect of the drink I just offered to make you all upon your visits. If so, then get ready for a tear jerker.

Okay, so, after my laying down time, Lisa and her friend, Julie showed up so we could do a little arts and crafts time and prepare the veils that we had decided to wear funeral style to Erica and Seans going away party. end-of-the-end-002

After our arts and crafts time, we headed over to Tibetan Kitchen for a yummy dinner of yummy Tibetan food. Good times. Then we got on the subway for the long, long trek to New Jersey. You should all see this as a testament to my love for all things Erica because I avoid Jersey at all costs. For serious. So for me to go out there is a big statement.

end-of-the-end-013

So, years later, we get to Jersey City and to Sean and Erica’s apartment. Let’s all take a moment to be thankful that we did not have to clean out our apartment of 7 years and either give away, throw away or store 95% of our stuff in preparation for a long road trip. Just the idea of it makes me never ever want to move.

end-of-the-end-042

The quote of the evening belongs to Julie who said “I thought I was tired but…I was tired of not dancing”.

end-of-the-end-0301

Before we left, we took a tour of the Van. To say it was Vantastic would be an understatement. It was impressive. Well done, Sean and Erica.

end-of-the-end-046

Well, friends, I’m sure going to miss you guys. However, Erica and I figured that there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll talk more often when they are on the road than we did when they lived here. Which is probably going to be true. So, have a great great trip!

Ho hum and boo hoo, dear readers. Today is the last day that I will see my good friends Erica and Sean for who knows how long. They are having a final party tonight and then are off on adventures unknown across our fine country for a period of some months. It’s all very exciting and I know they will have a great time, but I am nonetheless feeling that sad feeling you feel when someone you love goes away. However, I will callous up because I have a busy day:

1. Zak and I are seeing Friday the 13th at 11:00 am (yes, early for us night shifters) because it’s only $6 before noon and in these tough economic times it’s the right thing to do.

2. Then home for a nap. (yes, she’s 26 and napping in the middle of the day. she parties hard!)

3. Lisa, Julie and I are going to eat at one of my favorite places, The Tibetan Kitchen. Yes! Veggie dumplings here I come.

4. Then we are headed to Jersey (BOO!) for Sean and Ericas farewell party. The theme is “The End of the End” and it is supposed to be post-apocolyptic themed. However, I am thinking that Lisa and I will dress as if we were going to a funeral. You know, all black with black hats with the black mesh stuff that hangs over your face. I think that will be appropriate for our mood and also I imagine that post-apocolyptic earth will be a bit funereal so I think it would fit the theme as well. Pictures to come tomorrow.

So, a busy day for one and all. And if anyone knows where to get a hat like the one I described above, please let me know.

Let me paint you a picture of my attempt to sleep yesterday. I come home from work round about 7:30 am and after I take off my coat, I realize that it’s frackin’ cold and chillier inside than it is outside. So, I attempt to power through. I put on my jammies and get into bed. Mistake. Still ridiculously cold. So, I take my cold arm outside of the covers and feel the radiator and discover that it’s not on. That’s right, no heat. 30 something degree temperatures outside and no heat on in the casa. AHHH!

(no, it wasn’t snowing, but this is how cold I was)

So, I get out of the cold covers, add two blankets to the bed and put on a fleece jacket and a pair of wooly socks. Then I try to go to sleep but can’t due to the chattering teeth. So, I get up and get the space heater out of the living room and crank it on high and point it at me and then, finally, get to go to sleep.

And it didn’t warm up in my room until around noon when I was finally able to take off my fleece jacket. Yeah! And what else did I discover at noon? That the heater was back on!

The thing is, on my way home in the morning, I wasn’t that cold. I had a light coat, a scarf and gloves and wasn’t freezing. But I come inside and nearly freeze to death? I know, it sounds strange but it’s all part of the temperature funk that happens in our apartment. It’s always colder in here than it is outside. Which makes it awesome in the summer and crappin’ cold in the winter. I don’t know what it is about the location of our apartment but we don’t even need an air conditioner in the summer to combat the 90+ degree humidity but if it’s 30 degrees outside in the winter, I swear it’s 30 or less in here.

Worry not, readers, I am not about to tell you about my Bucket List since I don’t have one. Instead, I am going to tell you about how Amazon.com has been rocking my world lately.

You see, I make lists. I have a book list where I write down all the books I’ve heard about, read about, seen referenced in other books or talked about that I want to read.

I have a similar music list and website list and a list of gifts to buy others in 2009.

This Christmas, Meghan asked me what I wanted and I e-mailed her my book list. And while that sounds great, it was a little trickier than it seems since my book list is a bit crazy. Sometimes it’s titles, sometimes it’s authors, sometimes it’s a description of the book itself. To say it was confusing is an understatement.

Until now. I found on Amazon the Wish List and it’s the best thing ever. I was able to look up all the items on my book list and transfer them to my wish list and now I can easily access them without being confused as to title or author. I also added DVD’s, music, etc. to my wish list. I encourage you all to do this. Anytime you think of something you want, you can add it to your list. Then you can tell others later, or get these things for yourself at a later date. So, in December when Meghan again asks what to get me, I can send her the link to my Amazon.com Wish List. Thanks, Amazon.

I also recommend that my mother do this since she is the hardest person in the world to buy for. Seriously, mom, take a moment, add items to your wish list and send it to us all so we can get you something you want for your birthday and not be forced to guess and probably get it wrong. Please, please, please.

Follow-up to yesterdays post and Amber’s comment: Yes, we are covered for a plane crashing into the apartment. No worries.

Today I decided to peruse our new renter’s insurance policy that was sent to us a few weeks ago and I must admit, I found it quite informative and quite funny. For example, the following events are covered:

1. fire damage

2. lightning damage

3. riots that cause damage

4. volcanic eruptions

5. artificial electrical impulses (I don’t know what this is but it sounds like an EMP-you know the button they push in the matrix to shut down everything electric in the area. Uh, I hope this isn’t something Meghan and I have to worry about, but I guess it’s good to know that it’s covered.)

But, the following are NOT covered:

1. damage from war

2. earthquake damage that is not from a fire or explosion

I like that they will cover damage from a riot, but wars, civil and otherwise (yes, they specified) are not covered. Good to know. I must say that Meghan and I learned a lot about what to look for and what to be prepared for.

The only sad thing about the policy is that it does not cover the replacement cost of pets. So, should Lady perish in a riot, war or artificial electrical impulse, that would be it for her. We would not have the money to replace her. I must say that I find this to be a bit of a crock because they will cover the cost to replace plants and trees but not pets? What? Does PETA know about this?

After hearing about how great this show is for so long, I finally Netflixed it and am watching and loving it. It’s called Freaks and Geeks and was on for one season in 1999-2000 and has some really great people in it that might be familiar to some of you:

1. James Franco

James Franco

2. Jason Segel

3. Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen

4. Busy Phillips

So, if this show turns out to be a great mixture of Spiderman, How I Met Your Mother, Knocked Up and Dawsons Creek, I think we’re in for a good time. I’ll keep you all updated.

Today is my good friend, Autumn’s, birthday.

scan0017_0017(she’s the one making the awesome face!)

How much do I love Autumn? A lot.

scan0047_0047

On top of the fact that she’s funny, smart and awesome, she is the reason I got through nursing school.

scan0027_0027

Without her to talk to, laugh with, carpool with, etc, nursing school would have really really sucked instead of just regular sucking.

Thanks, friend and happy birthday!

When Amber and I went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University, not only did we sign on for the best 4 years of our lives in the greatest place in the world, but we also got the added bonus of living in the windiest city. They did research and surveys and Weatherford, Oklahoma won! Yes!

So, Amber and I would be walking to class and we would round the corner of a building and would be blasted by tornado strength wind and have to try to keep from falling over.

The point of this story is that for the last two days is has been Weatherford Windy in NYC. Yesterday on my way to Ezras, I was carrying a Chai Tea from Starbucks and rounded a corner and the wind nearly blew it out of my hand. And to add insult to windy injury, it’s been a freezing wind.

Watch yourselves, New Yorkers. It’s windy out there.

Yes, we did it! We took down the Christmas tree this week! Yeah! Perhaps you are thinking this is really late to be taking down the Christmas tree, but I assure you it is not. We rock Christmas hard in this house and we are well ahead of last years taking down the tree schedule by taking it down in February. Last year, we took it down in March.

Also of note, no one got injured in this years effort. Last year Meghan lost some blood to a rather large staple in the tree box, but this year we survived injury free!

Also, last year it took us a really long time to take down the tree and fit it in the box for some reason. So this year, we were dreading the prospect of a repeat. However, it took no time at all. Seriously. We were left wondering just why we were such idiots last year.

Well, what can you do? It’s down and Christmas is officially over for 316 West 75th once again.
